Is there anything wrong with this picture?
On January 15th, California Catholic Daily reported that Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C., would not prevent Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi from receiving the Eucharist. The most powerful Catholic politician in our country want to vote in favor of abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and legislatoin promoting homosexuality wants to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus? Well, come on down! You're the winner on "The Price is Right!" (Or should I say, "The price is wrong, [bleep]!")
In a similar, though unrelated story released the very next day, BBC News reports Bishop Francis Oboko of Nigeria will excommunicate Catholics who fail to register to vote for April's elections! Okay, the word "excommunication" is not actually used, but he will turn them away from church and that's what excommunication is. Never mind what they choose to vote for, or if they even bother to vote at all, but the mere inaction of failing to register is all it takes for this bishop to decide that you shall not receive Holy Communion.
Now, ain't that somethin'? It really shows you that the West and Africa are two very different worlds.
